MONUMENTS IN ROME

colosseum

The Colosseum is situated in Piazza del Colosseo and is open every day except December 25th and on January  1st  from 9am till one hour before sunset. Its construction was started by Emperor Vespasian in AD72 in the grounds of Nero's private Domus Aurea and it was inaugurated by his son Titus in AD80. Thereafter, inaugural games lasted for 100 days and nights, during which some 5000 animals were slaughtered. Damaged several times by earthquake, it was later used as a quarry for travertine and marble for Palazzo Venezia and other buildings. To this day, it remains an evocative place to explore.

pantheon

The Pantheon is situated in Piazza della Rotonda. Marcus Agrippa's Pantheon is one of the world's most sublime architectural creations: a perfectly proportioned floating dome resting on an elegant drum of columns and pediments. Built in 27 BC, and rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in 120 AD, it is one of Rome's best-preserved ancient monuments. Its extraordinary dome is the largest masonry vault ever built. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am-7:30pm and Sundays from 9am  6pm. Public Holidays from 9am at 1pm. Entry is free.

roman forum

The Roman Forum is situated in Largo Romolo and Remo. Built over the course of 900 years, the Roman Forum (Foro Romano) was the commercial, political and religious centre of ancient Rome from the Republican era until the 4th century AD. During medieval times the area was used to graze cattle and it was plundered for its precious marble.

The Spanish Steps have been designed by Italian Francesco De Sanctis, financed by a French diplomat, and named after the nearby Spanish Embassy, Rome's most famous staircase (completed in 1725) keeps it global with daily hordes of camera-clicking tourists, migrant hawkers and crush-struck local teens. Head to the top for Chiesa della Trinità dei Monti, or to the bottom for the boat-shaped Barcaccia (1627) fountain on Piazza di Spagna, attributed to Pietro Bernini (father of the famous Gian Lorenzo).

castle of saint angelo

The Castle of Saint Angelo is situated in Lungotevere di Castello, 50. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9am -  7pm. With its chunky round keep, this castle is an instantly recognisable landmark. Begun by Emperor Hadrian in 128 AD as a mausoleum for himself and his family, it was converted into a fortress for the popes in the 6th century AD. It was named by Pope Gregory the Great in AD 590, after he saw a vision of an angel above the structure heralding the end of a plague in Rome.

circus of massenzio
The Circus of Massenzio and Mausoleum of Romolo are situated on Via Appia Antica, 153. Open from  Tuesday to Sunday from 9am - 1pm. Entry is around € 3.00. To the south of the Palatino and surrounded by car-choked roads, the Circo Massimo (Circus Maximus) is now little more than a basin of rather forlorn grass. In the 1st century, however, this was Rome's biggest stadium, a 250,000-seater capable of holding a quarter of the city's entire population. The 600m racetrack circled a wooden dividing island with ornate lap indicators and Egyptian obelisks.
